Global Talent Visa: Tech Nation

Personal Immigration, 25 April 2023

On 25 April 2023, Tech Nation announced it has become part of Founders Forum Group and will continue to assess digital technology applications for the Global Talent UK visa route.

This was following the announcement earlier in the year that after a decade as a government-backed organisation serving the UK scaleup tech ecosystem, Tech Nation was set to cease trading as from 31 March 2023 after its government grant was withdrawn and awarded to Barclays Bank and it was actively seeking interested parties to acquire its portfolio of assets to take forward in a new guise.

Impact on Global Talent UK visa applications

The Global Talent visa route is for talented and promising individuals including in the field of digital technology wishing to work in the UK. Applicants must be leaders in their field or have the potential to be leaders (hold exceptional promise), as determined by a Home Office approved endorsing body.

For most individuals, there is a two-part application process. The first part is an application for endorsement in the field of digital technology by Tech Nation and the second part is an application for entry clearance or permission to stay.

Tech Nation becoming part of Founders Forum Group does not change the process of applying for Global Talent endorsement as a digital technology applicant. You can still use the Tech Nation website to continue an application you have started and start a new application.

You do not need a job offer to get the visa. Your background can be either:

  • Technical: for example, you’re a developer, engineer or data scientist
  • Business: for example, you have commercial, investment or digital product expertise in a technology company that creates software, hardware or that processes data

You can also get the visa if you’ve won an eligible award in the field of digital technology.

Importance of digital technology applications

The Home Office are committed to maintaining a strong digital technology offer as part of the Global Talent visa, and will try to minimise disruption to those applying. Tech Nation will continue to work with the government to start the next phase of the Global Talent visa for digital technology.

Implications for individuals

If you are an individual who is a leader (called ‘exceptional talent’) or potential leader (called ‘exceptional promise’) in digital technology, we can check whether you can meet the criteria needed for the visa.
