What is a Youth Mobility Scheme visa?

The Youth Mobility Scheme UK visa route allows a person aged between 18 and 30 from participating countries and territories (or aged between 18 and 35 for nationals of Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the Republic of Korea) to experience life in the UK for up to 2 years (or up to 3 years for Australian, Canadian and New Zealand nationals).

This UK visa route also includes applicants for the India Young Professionals Scheme (YPS).

No job offer or other sponsorship in the UK is required to apply for the visa.

    Further Information and FAQs

    • Is there an annual total allocation of places for the participating countries and territories?

The number of places allocated to nationals of the below countries and territories must not have exceeded the annual total allocation of places for that country or territory as set out below for 2024:

      • Andorra – 100 places
      • Australia – 45,000 places
      • Canada – 8,000 places

      • San Marino – 1,000 places
      • Taiwan – 1,000 places
      • Uruguay – 500 places

The maximum total allocation of places listed above does not apply to Australian, Canadian or New Zealand nationals already in the UK with valid permission under the Youth Mobility Scheme and who are applying for permission to stay under the scheme.

    • What is the financial requirement for a Youth Mobility Scheme visa?

You must have held £2530 in your bank account for a 28-day period before you apply. You also must not have any children aged under 18 who are either living with you or financially dependent upon you.

The above financial requirement does not apply to applications for permission to stay on the Youth Mobility Scheme route.

    • Which activities can you undertake in the UK if you hold a Youth Mobility Scheme visa?

Work is permitted subject to the following employment conditions:

      • No employment as a professional sportsperson (including as a sports coach)
      • No self-employment, except where you have no premises which you own, other than your home from which you carry out your business, the total value of any equipment used in your business does not exceed £5,000 and you have no employees

Study is also permitted except nationals of Andorra, Hong Kong, India, Monaco, San Marino, Taiwan and Uruguay must obtain a valid ATAS certificate prior to commencing study or research in certain specified subjects.

    • How long is a Youth Mobility Scheme visa valid for?

The Youth Mobility Scheme visa will be granted for up to 2 years.

If you wish to stay longer in the UK, you cannot extend your Youth Mobility Scheme visa unless you are an Australian, Canadian or New Zealand national in which case you can apply to extend your visa in the UK by one year after the 2-year period ends.

If you are not eligible to extend your Youth Mobility Scheme visa, you may be able to switch to a different visa, for example, a Skilled Worker visa, Scale-Up Worker visa or Global Talent visa.

    • Can you apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) as a Youth Mobility Scheme visa holder?

No, the Youth Mobility Scheme visa is not a route which leads to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the UK.

    • How long will your Youth Mobility Scheme visa application take to process?

The application can take up to 3 weeks to process. You may be able to get your visa faster within 5 working days if you pay an extra fee of £500 or by the next working day if you pay an extra fee of £1000, subject to availability at your visa application centre.

If you are applying for permission to stay in the UK, you’ll usually get a decision within 3 weeks but may be able to pay to get a faster decision – you’ll be told if you can when you apply.
