UK-India Migration and the Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement

Personal and Business Immigration, 01 March 2024

An agreement was made between the UK and India known as the ‘Migration and Mobility Partnership’ agreement in May 2021, with the commitment to strengthen cooperation between the UK and India in the field of migration and mobility, and with a view to encouraging the legal movement of professional skilled workers between the countries.

In this context, the India Young Professionals Scheme visa for the UK was devised, specifically designed to create opportunities for young Indian citizens who wish to take up employment and experience life in the UK, for up to a maximum period of 2 years.

The new scheme has since implementation, encouraged the mobility of Indian citizens to the UK who wish to contribute via their professional projects to the economic development of the UK.

What is the India Young Professionals Scheme (YPS) visa?

The India Young Professionals Scheme visa allows Indian citizens aged between 18 and 30 years to live and work in the UK for up to 2 years.  No job offer or other sponsorship in the UK is required to apply for the visa.

To be eligible for the visa, an Indian citizen must:

  • Be aged 30 or under on the date of application
  • Be aged 18 or over on the date their UK entry clearance will become valid
  • Hold a qualification equal to or above RQF level 6
  • Provide a local police certificate or a police clearance certificate that has been issued no more than 6 months before the date of application
  • Have held funds of £2,530 for a consecutive 28-day period, within 31 days before the date of application
  • Not have any children aged under 18 who are living with them or financially dependent upon them
  • Provide a valid medical certificate confirming they have undergone screening and are free from active pulmonary tuberculosis
  • Have been issued with an invitation to apply in accordance with the invitation to apply arrangements, and have made their application for the YPS visa within the period of time specified in that invitation to apply

How can an Indian citizen be issued with an invitation to apply for the visa?

An Indian citizen must be selected in the India Young Professionals Scheme ballot before they can apply for the visa. To enter the ballot, they must declare that they’re eligible for the visa and can meet all of the eligibility requirements as detailed above.

Although the first 2024 India Young Professionals Scheme ballot has now closed, details of the next ballot in July 2024 will be published on this page.

Generally, to enter the ballot, you need to provide your name, date of birth, passport details, a scan or photo of your passport, phone number and email address.  It’s free to enter the ballot.

The successful entries are picked at random and you will be sent the results by email within 2 weeks of the ballot closing.

How many places are available in the ballot?

There are 3,000 places available for the India Young Professionals Scheme visa in 2024. The remaining places will be made available in the July 2024 ballot.

If you’re successful in the ballot

If you’re successful in the ballot, you’ll be invited to apply for the visa and be issued with an invitation to apply in accordance with the invitation to apply arrangements.

You’ll then have 90 days from the date of the email to apply online, pay the visa application fee, which at the current date is £298.00 plus the immigration health surcharge, and provide your biometrics.

How long will your YPS visa be valid for?

The visa will be granted for 2 years.  However, after the 2-year period ends, you may be able to switch to a different type of UK visa, for example, a Skilled Worker visa, Scale-Up Worker visa or Global Talent visa.

In particular, the Global Talent visa offers excellent opportunities to suitably qualified persons for work and residence in the UK without attachment to a sponsor. As part of the ‘Migration and Mobility Partnership’ agreement, the UK’s Office for Talent will collaborate with appropriate bodies in India and directly with prospective migrants to promote take-up of this immigration route.

If you’re unsuccessful in the ballot

If you’re unsuccessful in the ballot, the results of the ballot are final and you cannot appeal.  You can only submit one entry per person.  However, you can enter future ballots which are typically in February and July each year.

Conditions of leave with the India YPS UK visa

Work is permitted in the UK including both employment and self-employment.  However, self-employment is only permitted if you have no premises which you own other than your home from which you carry out your business, the total value of any equipment used in your business does not exceed £5,000 and you have no employees.

Study in the UK is also permitted, except a valid ATAS certificate must be obtained prior to commencing postgraduate study or research in specified subjects or fields of research allied to fields such as medicine, mathematical and computer sciences and engineering.
